Bristol Tramways Centre 2008

Part of the 'new' decorations for the millenium celebrations. The funnels represent ship funnels which herald back to the time before 1935 when ships would sail right into the 'centre' as far as St Johns Bridge. The river was covered over in 1935 and there are many people who would have liked to have seen the river Frome to once again 'breathe air' again as far up as Christmas Steps (the Frome still flows underneath the current road plan).

Alas the Council deemed it too expensive and in 1999 the green area was transformed into shallow angular pools with fountains as if to draw the outline where the Frome once flowed.

The term 'Centre' does not imply that this is the centre of Bristol (that would be the Castle Park area), but rather the Tramways Centre when trams once used to terminate here.

I invite anyone to post a 'then and now' so my explanation can be seen first hand.
