Guy Fawkes (1570-1606) took part in the famous "Gumpowder Plot" in 1605. His military and explosives experience made him a key member in the planning of this revolutionary attack and joined the plot leader Robert Catesby in this attempt by a group of religious conspirators to kill King James I of England and VI of Scotland. Using 800 kg of gunpowder, they would blow up the Houses of Parliament but the plan failed. After being tortured and questioned they were sentenced to be 'hanged, drawn and quartered' but Fawkes cheated the hangman by jumping from the scaffold, breaking his neck before being drawn and quartered.
'Bonfire Night" a popular festivity held in Britain on november 5 every year, is centred on this event.
