Ein Rollbock ist in der Regel ein zweiachsiges Schienenfahrzeug mit dem ein normalspuriger Güterwagen auf einer schmalspurigen Eisenbahnstrecke befördert wird. In Süddeutschland werden sie auch als Rollschemel bezeichnet (welches Wort in der Schweiz für Rollwagen steht).
Durch den Einsatz von Rollböcken entfällt das Umladen der Güter vom Normalspur- auf das Schmalspurfahrzeug und umgekehrt. Die Kosten des Umladens, die den Betrieb von Schmalspurbahnen derart verteuerten, dass deren Kostenvorteile bei Anlage und Betrieb wieder verloren gehen konnten, entfielen solchermaßen. Das Aufbocken von Personenwagen war nicht üblich, da die Passagiere selbst relativ leicht die Fahrzeuge wechseln konnten und da das Kipp-Risiko im Falle der Personenbeförderung nicht akzeptabel gewesen wäre. Zu besonderen Anlässen wurden aber teilweise Spezialwagen verladen, z. B. solche mit Salon- oder Kinoeinrichtung. Grundsätzlich ist anzumerken, dass es, insbesondere in Deutschland, kein zusammenhängendes Schmalspurnetz, ähnlich jenem in Normalspur, gibt oder gab. Daher war eine weitgehende Normung und Standardisierung, wie sie bei den normalspurigen Eisenbahnen sinnvoll und im Sinne der heute so genannten Interoperabilität notwendig war und ist, nicht zwingend und fand auch nicht statt. Folglich kam es zu zahlreichen technischen Insellösungen, auch bei den Rollböcken. Die grundsätzliche Funktion ist aber stets dieselbe. Neben technischen Unterschieden waren auch die Vorschriften für den Betrieb verschieden, wobei die Vorschriften zum Teil die Technik beeinflussten, zum Teil aber auch in der Folge der technischen Voraussetzungen erlassen wurden.

A transporter wagon, in railway terminology, is a wagon (UIC) or railroad car (US) designed to carry other railway equipment. Normally, it is used to transport equipment of a different rail gauge. In most cases, a transporter wagon is a narrower gauge wagon for transporting a wider gauge equipment, allowing freight in a wider gauge wagons to reach destinations on the narrower gauge network without the expense and time of transshipment into a narrower gauge wagons.

This is an attempt to overcome one of the primary problems with a narrower gauge system—gauge incompatibility. However, it means that the narrower gauge network must be built to a structure gauge large enough to accommodate the loading gauge of the wider gauge equipment, negating one of the cost advantages of a narrower gauge construction. Additionally, a large wider gauge wagon balanced on a narrower gauge transporter wagon is not very stable, and is generally restricted to low speeds of 15 mph (24.1 km/h) or so.
